NGT orders ‘green’ concretization survey

The National Green Tribunal has called for a survey to find out the extent of concretization on designated green areas in Ghaziabad and examine if standard tiles have been used by civic authorities while laying pavements and footpaths.

The survey was ordered by the principal bench of the tribunal headed by chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar, while hearing a petition filed by local environmental activists. The bench appointed a local commissioner for the survey and ordered Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation to bear all expenses for the preparation of the report.

The survey was ordered after activists produced photographic evidence in the court of concrete pavements and footpaths have been laid by the municipal corporation. Further, the court was also told that concretization was being carried out to such an extent that it made percolation of surface water under the ground impossible.

“In our order dated February 20, 2014, we had clearly observed that the tiling/concretization of pavements should not exceed more than 5%, and the footpath and tracks constructed only with the permeable and semi-permeable, perforated blocks. There is a clear violation of our order,” the court observed in its order.

The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation, however, submitted photographic evidence to the court on Monday informing that there is no concretization of green areas in the city.
